The Portrait Session
My portrait sessions are fun! A typical portrait session takes approximately 90 minutes. I would like to get to know you first and get some sense of how you will use your portrait. We can also talk about possible looks and poses. Once you are comfortable, we will go into the studio and take 10 to 12 photographs using one of our restored studio cameras. All photographs are taken on 8X10 black and white film using classic lenses.
After your session, we will develop the film and print a proof set for your review. You can choose among the proofs for a portrait you would like to develop into a final print and suggest any corrections or touch ups required. We can then create a print or prints in any size from 8X10 to 16X20 inches. The entire process usually takes two weeks from your studio session.
A note on our technical methods: All of our portraits are taken on 8X10 film and developed in a two bath developer and fixed before drying. These negatives are then scanned at high resolution and final prints are made using a pigment based printer that uses only black and grey inks. We print on archival cotton rag paper for all of our portraits.
Fees
The studio session will cost $250 and covers the photographer’s time, the cost of film, the time to develop the film and the printing of a proof set. The studio fee is paid in advance and is non refundable but it can be transferred to another date if you need to reschedule your session.
Typical print fees run from $50 for an 8X10 print to $250 for a 16×20 gallery print. Matting is available for an additional fee.
